Welcome to The Bloom Room: our in-house additional Provision for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
At Welholme Academy, we are proud to offer The Bloom Room—a dedicated in-house additional provision within our mainstream setting for children with complex Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). All children in the Bloom Room have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) identifying SLCN as their primary area of need.
Children in the Bloom Room access a highly tailored curriculum, specially adapted by our SENDCo to meet their individual strengths, needs and next steps. The curriculum includes focused maths sessions centred on developing secure foundational number knowledge within 10, alongside interactive board-book story sessions designed to build word recognition and support language acquisition. Children also take part in Bucket Time activities to enhance attention and engagement, as well as “put it in” tasks that support picture recognition and the development of early communication skills.
In the afternoons, the curriculum shifts towards essential life skills. Children practise activities such as brushing teeth, zipping coats and brushing hair, helping them develop the independence they need for everyday life.
Progress is assessed using PIVATS, enabling us to celebrate small steps of achievement and plan learning precisely around each child’s next developmental goals. Every child is supported by a dedicated key worker who works with them on a 1:1 basis in line with their EHCP outcomes.
Children also benefit from free access to outdoor learning spaces, as well as our sensory room and a range of sensory equipment to support regulation and wellbeing.
The Bloom Room team includes our lead teacher, Mrs Welsh, and teaching assistants Mrs Fuller, Miss Muscroft, Miss Cawthen, Miss Arnold and is overseen by our SENDCo, Mrs Barker.
We work closely with our in-school Communication and Interaction Specialist Teacher, as well as the Chatter bugs Speech and Language Therapy Team, ensuring children receive specialist, consistent and high-quality support.
